What if Guinea Pigs have long nails?

My pig has gotten quite sharp nails, and they are long.

Are her long nails painful? I don't know what to cut them with.

If I do cut them, will she be in any pain? What if Guinea Pigs have long nails?
If they grow too big they can grow into her feet and yes that would be very painful. They sell nail clippers at pet stores. You could take her to the vet and ask them how to show you how to do it.What if Guinea Pigs have long nails?
Guinea pigs nails need to be cut every 3-4 weeks.

This website will explain how to cut them, and what to use.

http://www.guinealynx.info/nails.html

You can get bricks to put in your cage, to try to wear them down, but doing this still requires nail trimmings.
If you let them run around on concrete they will wear the nails down. If you don't want to cut them your vet will. It does not hurt them as long as you don't cut to close to the base.
I have around 30 guinea pigs. My favorite thing to use for nail trimmings is a pair of human cuticle ';nippers.'; They are easier to use and can get around larger, thicker nails of older guinea pigs. As has been said, the danger is cutting too close to the quick. Keeping styptic pens (drug store) on hand in case of a nick is a good idea.

When I need to trim the nails, I wrap the piggy, burrito-style, and offer a treat, like a baby carrot. Pull one little foot out at a time and trim. The carrot usually keeps the piggy occupied enough that by the time he realizes he should be angry, it's over. Sometimes, the really wiggly ones require another set of hands. The other person holds the pig, and then you can trim the nails.
You cut them with cat nail clippers. It isn't painful as long as you don't cut the vein going through the nail. If you aren't sure you can do it take your piggie to a vet.
what you sould do is take your gp to see a vet or take it to a pet shop and they should do it
We trim our little guy's nails when neccessary but we only take the very tip off. Having 1 person hold the guinea pig while the other does the trimming helps a lot.
you can trim them with special sissors (i think we used my dog nail clippers?) but you want to be VERY VERY careful!!! otherwise, just like a dog's nails they bleed and it is painful!

ask your vet, and they can probably do it for you/show you how.

in the future try to let your guinea pig run on a hard surface (pavement, outside with some stones..) so that they naturally wear down. we used to cut out the bottom of a kiddie pool (those plastic ones) and put our guinea pig inside it outside on the grass in the spring/summer (supervised of course, because after a while he learned to semi-jump it... plus to keep dogs/hawks away) really good for excersize, fresh grass and to reduce boredom.
Bring her to an exotics vet and ask her to show you how to clip your piggies??nails. Once you know how, it's a simple procedure that can be done with a pair of small dog or cat nail clippers. Also, Guinea Pigs should have a rough stone in their cage in order to maintain their nails. They should also have a friend... but I guess that's another subject.

  • How can i stop biting my nails?

Nothing helps no nail polish no nothing i need to know what is the best way to stopHow can i stop biting my nails?
I stopped biting my nails by getting acrylic nails, Since I paid for them I didn't want to bite them and if you do bite them it will hurt and break the whole nail !How can i stop biting my nails?
Bitten fingertips can become very sensitive to pain, usually at the place the skin meets the edge of the nail. Hangnails are broken skin on the cuticle. When they are improperly removed, they are susceptible to microbial and viral infections producing whitlows. Finally it may also result in the transportation of bacteria that are buried under the surface of the nail, or pinworms from anus region to mouth.Nail biting is also related to dental problems, such as gingival injury.

They have products that can help you stop. CVS and Walgreens sell ORLY NO BITE which would be in a purple nail polish bottle for 2.99. They also have another product called MAVALA Stop for Nail Biting which is like $8.00.

If those dont work you might want to try reverse behavioral therapy.

Keep them trimmed also so maybe there is less chance of it happening?
I have the same prblrm its so annoying I just cant stop but here are some things that you can do to stop.........

drug stores sell a nail polish that gives a bad tast when you put it into your mouth.

put your hands in garlic belive me that ones definately worcks!! lol.

Put a clear or color nail polish on your nails so that when you go to bite them yu will realize that you shouldnt.

Uhmm what about acrylic nails thats what I did to stop bitting.

Try putting hot sauce on your nails so you wont bite them. Well, thats all I can think of for now I hope I helped
    try using this....http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.j??/a>

it did it really helped me. Plus nail biting is mental
wear a rubberband on your wrist, when ever you feel the urge pull the rubberband back and let it snap your wrist, do it 3 times.... this is called negetive reinforcement.
get one of those little pots with the bad tasting stuff in the sponge, you dip your fingers in 1 at a time, and it dries instantly, its vile, i bought it for my son and OH, they both stopped instantly
there are these nail varnishes which taste gross
I would normally suggest a bad tasting nail varnish but... maybe try chewing gum instead?
    have all your teeth removed

How can you stop bitting your nails?

I have tried nastytasting nail polish, regular nail polish, and bitting myself when I bit them. I did fine in the summer and they grew out but when school started I think it's the stress that made me start again. it's gross and annoying. HELP!How can you stop bitting your nails?
i really sympathise as i used to do this too - and i also used to bite the cuticles around the nail and it looked so gross and painful people would flinch just looking at my hands. now my nails are so long, honestly, people ask all the time if they are acrylic!

it was really hard to stop, i won't lie - the thing that worked for me is just constantly using the disgusting tasting stuff - eventually, before you even put your hand to your lips you know you're going to taste that horrible taste (and i used the stop biting boots stuff - don't know if you tried it, but it is MILITANT - it literally lasts like 3 days!) and then you just tell yourself aha, this is the moment that i can do something about it. slowly but surely you will stop - you don't stop wanting to, it's a hard habit to break, but you get used to catching yourself constantly and that becomes easier.

and then another thing that helped me, is go and treat yourself to some nice manicure stuff - i used to have a thing for chanel nail varnishes so i went and bought two and i so looked forward to using them - that helped. and if your nails are weak and brittle, i'd recommend sally hansen nail strengthening stuff.

hope that helps and good luck! How can you stop bitting your nails?
Maybe you didn't use the whole nail polish thing correctly. You are meant to do your nails beautifully, so when you actually want to bite your nails you will think it's a shame.

If not, while walking around the house always have a carrot, a rice biscuit or celery sticks with you and you are tempted to bite your nails, have a bite of the food instead! (The good thing about these is, they don't have calories)

    Hope i helped

    xxx
thats a vry bad habit you have tried all the methods i know but maybe this will scare you:

My brother was a nail biter until one day he was biting his nails and they started leaking out this gross white puss and he had to be on medication because he bit them to short and the bacteria from his mouth caused it.

It can cause bad infections its just not healthy.
I am 22 and I used to bite my nails ALL the time. I didn't stop until about 6 months ago when I got braces, lol. It is very easy to not bite them when you see how nice they look long. Try getting a manicure, or wearing fake nails until your real nails grow out. Once they are nice and long, paint them your favourite colour. Eventually, you won't want to bite them anymore.
they actually sell a nail polish that taste like garlic u should buy it its clear but it tastes funny ( like garlic) ask 4 it over at SALLY'S

i've heard that it is due to a calcium defficiency but i eat a lot of dairy products and drink a lot of milk and orange juice. i was wondering if any one knew what caused them and if there is any way to get rid of them? What are the white spots on your nails caused from?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeukonychiaWhat are the white spots on your nails caused from?
Yep, I have also heard it was from a calcium deficiency. Try some calcium supplements.
I've heard that too.... Not positive but I notice that I get them after I hit my fingers on things some big some small.
Haha! Those are only ';nail bruises'; If you bump your nail those white things are only bruises. Hope that helps

How can you remove nail polish stains from your nails?

i dont know about everyone else but i love to paint my nails- both toes and fingernails. problem is- from painting them so much i have ended up really ended up staining them from so much red and other may different colors. how can you whiten that? Any products you can buy or maybe make urself? How can you remove nail polish stains from your nails?
Well- I`ve had a lot of people ask me this question over and over again i work at a beauty salon.

The way is you want to do this is have your hands in hot water for 20 minutes tops. Then your nails should be pretty soft. Now this next procedure might sound painful, or harmful to you but you must take a cutical cutter and take off the nail polish you would scrape of the nail polish as if it were your cutical.

    Yours truly,

Adriana cHow can you remove nail polish stains from your nails?
your nails are a funny orange or yellow color yea? your nails are not getting the oxygen they need, if you don't paint your nails for 2-3 days it will go away. However if you keep painting them it will get worse. Think of it almost as like clogging the pores of your nails..
Slice a lemon in half and rub over your nails, that should bleach the stains out, or maybe rub or brush a little smokers tooth polish powder over them, and then in future, always use base coat first, before applying your bright colours
you can buy products to take the stains out. At some drug stores or ULTA or Sally Beauty.

But try using a base coat before usig dark or red nail colors and use acetone base nail polish remover. not non aceton, moisturizing or sensitive.

Anyone know alternatives to cutting hedgehog nails?

Nothing I do seems to work. Sonic (my hedgehog) refuses to get his nails cut. When I try all I get is a growl and lots of quills. Any suggestions? I know that we're supposed to go to the vet's for help, but I can't afford it right now. Help?Anyone know alternatives to cutting hedgehog nails?
Put Sonic on concrete or lay rough sandpaper in his hutch. Anyone know alternatives to cutting hedgehog nails?
I hope Sonic is a happy hedgehog. Thanks.

Many people suggest putting a brick in the cage in an attempt to file the nails down to a healthy length. Unfortunately, some hedgehogs will just avoid the brick and not benefit from it in any way. Another option is lining the wheel with sandpaper, which also delivers mixed results. Some will run and keep their nails short with no negative effects, but others will run their feet raw. If you do take this route, you must ensure that you can inspect his/her feet on a daily basis to make sure that no injury occurs.

I would not strongly recommend these just for the reason that there is a great deal of risk involved. What I would suggest is getting a friend to help you. Scruff your hedgie by pulling the skin on his back inwards towards the shoulder blades, getting the 'scruff' of skin similarly to how a mother cat would carry her kittens. It takes a bit of practice to do it right, but this will prevent your hedgie from rolling into a ball and leaves his/her feet at easy access for your friend to trim them.

    Good luck!!
